Ploughing Championships in Moore this Sunday

The 16th annual Roscommon County Ploughing Championships will be held in our neighbouring parish of Moore this Easter Sunday, 4th April 2010.  The event will be hosted by Padraig and Frances Greene on their lands at Earlspark in the parish of Moore. The farm is located on the old N6 Athlone to Ballinasloe road, approximately 3 miles from Ballinasloe town. Drum native Brendan Shine will perform the official opening on the day. The main  sponsor of this year’s event is Supermac’s. The ploughing classes on the day will include senior open, three-furrow, under 21 and 28, farmerette, horse, junior, vintage and loy classes. Other attractions on the day will include Sheepdog Trials, Tug-o-war, a Kitchen Garden display and a craft village. South Roscommon Vintage Club, based in Taughmaconnell but with many members from Drum and Moore also, will have a display of vintage tractors and classic cars while other clubs from around the region will also participate in the tractor drive and threshing display. The Rose of the Plough will also be selected on the day, and the winner will go forward to the Rose of Roscommon contest. The annual County Ploughing Championships in Roscommon is typically one of the largest in the country and large crowds are expected to attend.
