Drum is a rural community located west of Athlone in the south of county Roscommon, close to the River Shannon. Drum, from ‘Droim Dreastan’ meaning Dreastan’s ridge in Irish, is the name of both the civil parish and a townland. There are 42 townlands in parish. Drum Monastic Site is believed to have been the centre of worship in the parish for centuries. The site has been preserved as a heritage site and the adjoining lands continue to be used as burial grounds. St. Brigid’s Church is located south of the monastic site, while Drum Parish Hall and Drum Heritage Centre, formerly Drumpark National School, is located just east of the site. Drum Community Centre is located in Crannagh, alongside Summerhill primary and secondary schools. for girls and St. Joseph’s National School.
The townland of Clonown is in the civil parish of St. Peter’s, though is enclosed by the River Shannon to the east and the civil parish of Drum on all other sides. The two parishes (Drum and St. Peter’s) are combined to form the Catholic Parish of Ss. Peter & Paul – Athlone, Drum and Clonown.
Bibi Baskin once described Drum as being “not a town, nor a village, but a place apart.”
