Drum Bingo to resume as community centre reopens

The weekly parish bingo in Drum is set to resume on Friday 21st January with the reopening of Drum Community Centre, Athlone following recent weather damage.

Bingo had been called off for an unprecedented seven weeks in a row, initially due to the severe weather conditions and then due to damage caused by burst pipes in the community centre. A number of other events were also forced to cancel or find alternative venues while the building was closed, including the Roscommon GAA Convention, which was due to be held there on Saturday 8th January.

The south Roscommon community centre was forced to remain closed after Christmas, in the interests of health and safety, as the water supply had to be disconnected while repair work was carried out on the heating system. The repairs have now been completed, and the sports hall reopens on Monday 17th January. Bingo resumes on Friday night at 8.30pm.

The Irish language pre-school Naíonra Réalta Geala, which operates out of Drum Community Centre, had also been forced to close for a number of days before and after Christmas due to frozen pipes, but reopened on Wednesday last, 12th January.

Committee secretary Aidan McEvilly thanked people for their understanding over recent weeks and said “this is an important community service for the greater Athlone area. We look forward to welcoming people back to bingo in Drum and extend a warm welcome to all to come along on Friday nights and join in the fun, either by playing or by helping out.”
