Clann Na nGael Skills Clinic
A very successful Athlone Springs Hotel sponsored Skills Clinic came to an end last Friday in Johnstown. Over a hundred enthusiastic footballers aged between 10-16 took part in the clinic and were trained in all skills of Gaelic Football from the fundamentals of the game of catch and kick to the more advanced evasive and tactical skills. The purpose of the clinic was to encourage everybody to enjoy sport and improve his or her skill level. The coaches each day introduced a new skill to each player and this was demonstrated by inter county stars like Shane Curran, Darren Lennon, Conor Mortimer, Kieran Fitzgerald, Donie Shine, Cathal Cregg, Michael Finneran and David Flynn. Each player also passed on their advice on how to improve their skills and what to do in match scenarios and there was particular interest in the different styles of free-taking. Former Westmeath hurling manager and current St Faithleach’s manager Seamus Qualter along with former Clann legends Eamon Snr McManus, Eamon Jnr McManus and Joey Connaughton were on hand to give advice and coach during the many blitzes held throughout the week. Each participant in the camp also got Clann Na nGael gear including jerseys which were worn all week. On Friday the parents were treated with a demonstration of skills learned, which was followed by presentations and refreshments. The skills clinic followed on from a very successful summer camp the previous week, mainly due to the hard work of Declan and Alona Rock, Padraig Naughton, Caroline Geraghty and Gary Quinn who co-ordinated the week. The club would like to thank all that helped out behind the scenes with the gear and the facilities, the coaches, the schools, the sponsors, those who prepared all the food Friday, the parents and most of all the boys and girls who made it a worthwhile and enjoyable week.

Gaelic4Girls
Last Sunday the girls from the Monksland area who participated in the above programme were brought to Croke Park to take part in a National Blitz. Over 350 girls and 38 teams from Derry, Dundalk, Drogheda, Monaghan, Dublin and Limerick also took part in what was a very professional run event. All the girls got a brief history and tour of stadium and dressing rooms, coaching sessions and fun games with the Ladies All-Stars, a packed lunch and various souvenirs of the day including a medal, bag, skills ball, posters etc. The pitch was cordoned off into 6 areas with 5 pitches for the mini-games and a sixth area for coaching, penalties etc., and the whole event ran very smoothly. Despite the hectic schedule which including every team playing three 14 minute games and heavy demand on water and drinks due to the brilliant sunshine, every girl truly enjoyed the experience with many family and friends sitting in the stands looking on. The girls also got numerous autographs of players and photos with the Brendan Martin Cup.
All-Stars present included Valerie Mulcahy, Breige Corkery and Angela Walsh from Cork, Caoimhe Marley and the O’ Donnell twins from Armagh, Grainne Nulty from Meath, Claire O’Hara from Mayo, Niamh Kindlon from Monaghan and many current Dublin players also helped out. The whole concept and opening of Croke Park to these girls was brilliant and for about 5 hours they were treated like players on All-Ireland Final Day. Mary Beades and the Ladies Association, Roscommon Sports Partnership and the various coaches deserve great credit for the hard work and also the girls and their parents.

Congratulations to Orla O’Neill who was picked to play in the Mini-Sevens which will be held in Croke Park on All-Ireland Semi-Final day on August 31st.
